When considering the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice many have pondered as to why the musician's fate was so and if “…the gods imposed a condition that they knew he could never fulfill” (Morford 383). Mitchell explores this question within Hadestown as the fates echo to Orpheus, “Who are you to think you can walk the road no one ever walked before” in Wait for Me. Portrayed by Reeve Carney, the audience is taken on a whirlwind ride expecting the myth to end differently every time, if not at minimum hoping as much as Mitchell portrays Amber Gray’s Persephone convincing Patrick Page’s Hades to entertain Orpheus’s love. Narrated and taken to each new stop by Hermes, André De Shields delivers us Eva Noblezada who encapsulates the audience, as does the whole cast, with a rich heart as Eurydice. We too, begin to believe in the tenderness of Orpheus we thought did not exist and even in death will attempt to run away again to better circumstances, to remember life.. With foreshadowing seeped into the musical layering the complexities of Greek myth, the industrial backdrop and jazz influence helps exemplify these themes. The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is an old one and Mitchell wrote a book that truly transforms this story, as well as that of Persephone and Hades.
