Biography:

Marie Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne de la Fayette was born on March 18th 1634 and passed away on May 25th 1693. She was a writer and a novelist. Despite not being a figure of the 18th Century, Madame de La Fayette was the author that sparked the idea of this project, I chose to still include her in the exhibit.

She was raised within the Close circle of the Cardinal de Richelieu and after the death of her father and the remarriage of her mother, she became close friends with the Marquise de Sévigné. She received a very literary education by Gilles Ménage and will enter literary salons under the patronage of Madeleine de Scudéry. She also was a great friend of the author De La Rochefoucauld.

One of her greatest pieces of work is “La princesse de Clèves” printed and published in 1678, anonymously. It is the first historical novel of the literary history of France
