ABSTRACT

Graduate students in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Program voiced concern over Zoom fatigue. Curriculum for the cohort of 12, is normally onsite and interactive. To address these concerns an alternative delivery method was needed and 60% of live lectures were converted to “lecture summary” assignments. Content was provided in PowerPoint form for the students to read, with expanded information in the notes sections followed by optional Q&A sessions. These assignments were intended to engage students by asking them to video record an 8-10 minute segment. This exercise had multiple purposes, the most important was for the student to voice crucial take away points. They were to narrate the summary in a conversational tone as if speaking to a residency mentor, thus honing their clinical communication skills. Finally, the students were asked to write two quiz questions with answers. One at a low Bloom’s taxonomy level and one high. These questions (without answers) were distributed for studying. Feedback for this assignment was positive and exam scores did not change from previous years. It gave students flexibility throughout their remote learning day and the ability to engage with the lectures at their own pace. Students became increasingly comfortable with their speaking ability, and they considered the quiz questions a bonus. As we transitioned back to campus, this auditory/verbal teaching technique is now used to free up time normally spent in live lecture and is instead used for clinical and laboratory activities. The increased active learning time in the laboratory and one-on-one with patients is appreciated by students. The assignment can be used in any discipline to reduce live lecture fatigue or shift time to other course activities.
