"Gákte-Quipo" Máret Ánne Sara and Cecilia Vicuña, 2017-21

Full description

This textile installation combines cultures. It is made up of Sámi clothing that has been twisted and tied into a quipo form, an ancient recording system of strings and knots used by cultures in the South American Andes. Both are cultures that have gradually begun to disappear over time, so this piece seeks to honor both cultures and showcase how indigenous communities are disproportionately and negatively affected by the climate crisis, no matter the hemisphere.
