"Avataq" Couzyn van Heuvelen, 2016

Full description
This installation piece is made up of “floating, shimmering, silver-foil balloons in the shape of sealskins” displayed in a way that imitates the Arctic underwater (McMaster & Vincent). The artwork is meant to represent the importance of nature to Inuit culture and identity, showcasing how the climate crisis is slowly stripping them of their livelihood. The rapidly warming globe is causing the ice to melt, which affects the seal population, which in turn affects the Inuit people, showcasing the unfair effects of the climate crisis on marginalized groups.
