Full description

As Hokusai continued publishing these volumes, he began organizing them into certain topics. In this volume, architecture and drawings of a divine or mythical power or are of higher social status became a focal point. These images are drastically larger and more complex than in his first couple volumes. In the first half of this volume, drawings of the architecture of the time take up most of the pages with usually one building per page or per spread between two pages. Even in the later drawings where he drew people or clusters of people and their surrounding backgrounds, they took up a full page. In these images, we can see more details in the expressions, clothing, and their surroundings with the use of different line thicknesses, complex patterns and shading techniques. In this volume there is some use of color. There are shades and tones of pink and grey. This adds a sense of dimension to the structures and figures.
