Full description

"Storm below Mount Fuji" (Sanka no haku u) is one of Katsushika Hokusai's iconic "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series of paintings. Hokusai had a personal fascination to Mt. Fuji. His goal is to represent the mountain from a variety of perspectives, as well as in various seasons, weathers, and times of day. In this artwork, Mt. Fuji appears to be undisturbed by the destructive thunderstorm, which is shown with a bolt of red lightning. Could this be Hokusai's way of depicting the strength and serenity of Japan, as Mount Fuji is the emblem for the country's soul?
