Plum Blossoms at the Edge of the Water, from "Fashionable Versions of Poetry Immortals in the Four Seasons", Suzuki Harunobu.
Full description
Suzuki Harunobu, About 1769, Woodblock print; ink and color on paper
This image depicts two figures, a wakashu and a woman. The wakashu and woman are wearing matching clothing and are both depicted with delicate features. The wakashu’s shave head can be seen and the woman has decoration in her hair style. The woman's obi is much wider than the wakashu’s and is tied at the back. The wakashu is standing on a fence while the woman is covering a lantern with her sleeve. The wakashu is grabbing a plum branch with both of his hands and has tucked his clothing into his obi, revealing parts of his leg. There is a stream in the background and a poem in a cloud at the top of the page. In this image it is the wakashu being sexualized, with the bare leg being flashed and the woman being completely covered from the neck to toe. The two in this image are in a relationship, which can be known through the matching patterns in their outfits. This image shows that even in a relationship with a woman and presenting not explicitly femininely, wakashu can still depicted as the sexual focus.
