Kylix, Red figure pottery
Full description
The Brygos Painter, Kylix (wine drinking cup), 5-6th century, Holds 8oz of fluid; Pottery
Kylix is a collection of red figure pottery wine cups, common in the 5-6th century of Greek depicting intimate scenes between man and boys. As shown on the pottery, the older adult male (whom we can identify with the beard and height) holding the yonger boy by the head and with their lips barely touching. The adult man is also holding something similair to a walking stick. The difference in position and the head holding gesture gives the viewers a idea of power dynamics, the assumed walking stick feel like the representation of power and position. This scene gives me a feeling that this is a loving and intimate but at the same time strict and teaching relationship, similar to some master and student dynamics in Samurai and wakashu relationships.
