Hishikawa Moronobu (d. 1694) A Visit to the Yoshiwara, section 5 (detail of cat. no. 1) Edo period (1615–1868) Handscroll; ink, colors, and gold on paper

Full description

Moronobu, the artist behind the scroll, had been formerly married to a courtesan, due to this he had inside knowledge of the Yoshiwara. In this hand-scroll we see courtesans on display. We see commerce on the street, samurai with swords keeping their face concealed by sedge hats. As well as on the far left, what looks like a small house. Is a house of assignation where top-ranked courtesans meet clients. They are behind what look like cage bars. Which I feel symbolizes the trapped state that the courtesans experience. Since most will never make it out of the Yoshiwara. Since they were charged expenses such as food, clothes , and accommodations. Which would in-debt them for many years to the brothel owner.
