Full description
Tatsushiro Koushun, Edo Kaji Zukan, 1814, scroll Though this is only one part of the scroll out of the many fire incidents that are drawn on there, this Fire of Meireki was strongly impressionable that no one dare to miss it. As the Firefighters (火消し) all takedown homes that are close to the fire from further spreading, there are frantic people with their bags and carts trying to escape while horses with higher rank going to and fro trying to give an order. As an overwhelming amount of firefighters attend one section of the spreading fire, the fact that the fire spread to 60-70% of the city in the span of 3 days shows how the firemen were not enough as well as everyone is disorderly in trying to escape. There are also instances where people with carts and large cargo often blocked escape routes which tends to only fit a small number of people and not a big box. Hence causing a lot of delays, and a lot more casualties.
