Utagawa Toyohiro (Japanese, 1763–1828). Eight Views of Edo, ca. 1771. Bound book of polychrome woodblock prints; ink and color on paper. 9 3/4 x 14 7/8 in. (24.8 x 37.8 cm)

Full description

This is one of Toyohiro's paintings in his collection titled "Eight Views of Edo". This painting from roughly 1771 has since lost most of its color, but what little is left still sheds some spectacular insight about how the use of color and strong lines can draw the viewers eye in a predictable manner in order to convey a specific message. This is a level of detail, not only in what he is painting but rather how he is painting the scene, is what allows this painting to be so accessible and more easily interpreted by those who may not be as familiar with art as a whole. This is a skill that he would teach to his students later in his life.
