Wild Cherry and Swallows

Resource added
Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando) (Japanese, 1797-1858). Wild Cherry and Swallows, ca. 1830s. Color woodblock print on paper. 14 13/16 x 5 1/8 in. (37.7 x 13 cm)

Full description

Hiroshige’s technique includes broad and smaller connective strokes that allow for a viewer to gain a broader developed view of the art as more time is spent grasping the depth of the art. The details become deeper as the viewer gains a better insight of the movement articulated through the different brush strokes. The gradient of colors, red, beige, and blue, allows for the viewer’s eyes to perceive movement of the swallows. As more time is spent dissecting his art, it becomes more clear that there are not three birds but rather five birds in action and united from the viewer’s perspective.
