Itō Jakūchu, Roosters, Hens and Chicks

Resource added
c.z. Late 18th Century, Ink on Paper, 48 x 18 in

Full description

This set of ink paintings is notable for its dynamic portrayal of its subjects. Rather than follow the Kano school convention of painting from pre-made instructional manuals, Jakūchu spent a significant amount of time studying the roosters he saw every day. The brushwork in these paintings is controlled and precise, displaying a mastery of technique, and a comfortability with modeling living forms. Further, Jakuchu has purposefully posed his chickens to display a variety of poses and actions, demonstrating a strong grasp of the animals themselves. This work endures as an example of Jakuchu's skill and unique methods of depiction.
