Under the Wave off Kanagawa
In the early hours of the morning, three fishing boats and their rowers battle the tumultuous and imposing waves in a race to the market. Nearly camouflaged amongst the waves, Mount Fuji stands in the background. Now emblematic of Japanese culture and ukiyo-e, this image reveals the burgeoning influence of Western art and culture in Japan. Luxurious Prussian blue ink and dramatic mathematical perspective, initially inspired by/imported from the West, afforded Hokusai additional means by which to distinguish his art as even more profoundly innovative. The meticulous combination of natural observation and imaginary elements also reflect Hokusai’s eccentric influences. For all his influences, this iconic image would go on to inspire artists and artistics movements in the West and firmly establish Hokusai as a world renowned artist.
