36 views of mt. Fuji, the great waves off kanagawa
Full description
In this painting, Hokusai also adopts mt. Fuji at the focal point. By using perspective, Hokusai shows the greatness of the waves. Additionally, in the foreground, the cresting waves seem so threatening to swallow the mountain fuji and the fishing boats. Although Hokusai describe this as the great waves of the kanagawa, I prefer to learn this also to indicate the tough life of the fisherman, and their bravery for shuttling between the great waves. Also, this painting uses the technique of color wood print and ink, which Hokusai had learned since he was a child. By knowing the delicate technique of wood print, such as hardness, crispness of wood, makes Hokusai able to make his observations of waves, fishboats, and fisherman widespread in Japan.
