The Courtesan Kaoru of Owariya matched with Okitsu

This image is significant because it demonstrates what courtesans were expected to be like with patrons who visited Yoshiwara. The courtesan Kaoru matches all of society’s high beauty standards, with whitened skin, blackened teeth, a shaved hairline, and an intricate hair style with many pins. Her kimono also has many layers and patterns, and features the color red, all of which demonstrates her high social status within Yoshiwara. Her posture is relaxed and inviting, which gives off the impression that she lives in comfort and luxury. Additionally, she was playing the shamisen which was a common skill that courtesans were expected to master. Having a talent to share added to the beauty and allure, and set Yoshiwara courtesans apart from prostitutes. So much of her life was preparing to be perfect and entertaining men in a certain way.
