Aphrodite
Full description
On the horizontal rectangular canvas, we see Aphrodite (Venus) who is painted in the center with light nude colors and bright red flowing hair rising out of the calm blue-green ocean standing on a white half clam shell. She is looking straight ahead. On the left of her, we see a white man with brown hair, wings and a blue robe carrying a red-headed woman with a brown robe above the ocean blowing wind on Aphrodite. The woman, who is known as one of the Graces, is throwing white flowers onto Aphrodite. Both individuals are looking towards the center of the painting. On the right of Aphrodite, we see the lightly painted Hora of Spring in a white dress with blue flowers opening a pink robe to place on Aphrodite, welcoming her to Cyprus. Behind her, to the right, we see orange trees which are symbolic to the Medici family as they are the ones who commissioned the piece. Behind her and to the left, we see the coastline of Italy and the blue skies as we look into the horizon. The forefront of the painting is warm toned colors while the background is blue and green in which this creates a contrast that makes the painting notable.
