Hadestown
Full description
Hadestown is a musical with the music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. The original music premiered in Vermont in 2006. Mitchell then turned it into a concept album in 2010. Premiering on Broadway in 2019, it is a version of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Still, it also tells another version of Persephone's character and her relationship with Hades, king of the Underworld. In the show, Eurydice is a poor, hungry young girl who goes to the industrial version of the Greek Underworld (called Hadestown) to escape poverty, and Orpheus goes there to rescue her. The show also centers around Persephone and her relationship with Hades, but it is also another representation of Persephone as an individual. In the Broadway show, Persephone is a vibrant and independent woman who loves Hades but longs for the world above. She leaves her home from above to go to Hades' kingdom in the Underworld. She then spends part of each year bringing spring to the land.
