This tragic play written by Sophocles around the year 440 BC is the most popular depiction of the mythological figure Antigone, who is the daughter of Oedipus. It tells the story of Antigones brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, who die fighting eachother in a civil war. Polynices is Refused a proper burial. However, Antigone defies this order and gives him a proper burial anyways. This defiance leads to Antigone being sentenced to death, and she kills herself while awaiting execution.
