The statue depicts an episode from Book 9 of Homer’s “Odyssey”, in which Odysseus dulls Polyphemus's senses by giving him wine and then blinds him with a pole.

Full description

Reconstruction of the Polyphemus group in Sperlonga sculptures originally created in the 1st century BC. The sculpture depicts Odysseus (Ulysses) and his men attempting to blind the Cyclops, Polyphemus, with a pole made red-hot.
