Full description

This sculpture of Ares shows both sides of his character. It shows his masculinity and position as the God of War with his spear in his right hand, ready to fight. His other arm shows his side as a lover embracing Aphrodite. The Smoothness of the marble shows the facial expression between Ares and Aphrodite. With such smoothness in the material, depth is added to the sculpture producing detailed muscle and flow of material.

Antonio Canova, 1817-1822
