Hadestown
Full description
A retelling of the Greek myth weaves together two love stories: that of young Orpheus and Eurydice alongside the ancient marriage of Hades and Persephone. As Hades' wife, Persephone divides her time between bringing summer to the world above and enduring life in her husband's industrial underworld. Their troubled marriage manifests in harsh winters and famine above ground, which ultimately drives a desperate Eurydice to accept Hades' offer of security in his underground factory. When Orpheus journeys below to rescue his love, he finds Eurydice trapped in endless labor, while his quest becomes unexpectedly entangled with the gods' own story. Through his music, Orpheus accomplishes what centuries could not - he reminds Hades of his original love for Persephone, rekindling their connection. This moment of divine reconciliation prompts Hades to offer the mortal lovers a chance at freedom, with one crucial condition: Orpheus must lead Eurydice out without looking back to confirm she follows. In the final steps of their ascent, doubt consumes Orpheus and he turns, forever condemning Eurydice to Hadestown. As spring returns above, Persephone and Hades continue their ancient pattern, but with renewed understanding of their love; a hint that even through the cyclical nature of their stories, Orpheus may one day succeed in rescuing Eurydice. The piece was created on April 17, 2019.
