The scene depicts Ariadne after she awakens on Naxos, only to find that she was abandoned by her lover Theseus. In contrast to many other depictions of Ariadne, de Morgan’s does not show the typical rage; by contrast, she shows Ariadne after her rage has subsided, solitary and desolate.
