Full description

90.8 x 132.8 cm oil on canvas Artist: Evelyn De Morgan Date: 1877 Location: De Morgan Centre, Wandsworth, London, England Description: one of the earliest works by Pre-Raphaelite English painter Evelyn de Morgan, the piece is painted in a neoclassical style. The scene depicts Ariadne after she awakens on Naxos, only to find that she was abandoned by her lover Theseus. In contrast to many other depictions of Ariadne, de Morgan’s does not show the typical rage; by contrast, she shows Ariadne after her rage has subsided, solitary and desolate.
