Abstract:

This project was informed by a lack of collections care expertise among small heritage organization in King County. The goal of this thesis was to develop a Collections Management Policy that supports the mission of the Shoreline Historical Museum, provides guidance for staff and volunteers on managing the museum’s collections regardless of their previous collections experience, and allows museum leadership to establish and enforce collections policies. The process of developing the policy involved researching best practices in other similar institutions and continuous collaboration with the Board of Trustees. This collaboration included education for the board regarding the purpose and importance of a Collections Management Policy. The Collections Management Policy that was created will allow Shoreline Historical Museum to continue to develop their collections in an organized, ethical, and intentional way.
