Abstract:

This thesis project, Interpretation Through Native Plants: Designing Interpretive Signage for the Native Beauty Collection at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, explored how interpretive signage can strengthen visitor engagement with native plant collections through accessible, visitor-centered design. Developed in partnership with Kruckeberg Botanic Garden in Shoreline, Washington, the project focused on the creation of the Native Beauty Collection, an interpretive initiative highlighting Pacific Northwest native plants located along the garden's Discovery Loop trail. The project resulted in two primary deliverables: a series of interpretive signage panels featuring selected native plant species and a comprehensive interpretive playbook designed to support future signage development by garden staff, interns, and volunteers. Drawing upon principles of museum interpretation, environmental education, and accessibility, the signage emphasized five interconnected themes: ecological relationships, cultural connections, plant adaptations, seasonal change, and the role of native species in supporting biodiversity. Each panel encouraged visitors not only to identify and learn about plants, but also to reflect on the relationships between people, place, and the natural world. Beyond the prominent implementation of new interpretive materials, this project also demonstrates how small public gardens can use interpretation as a tool for fostering curiosity, promoting environmental stewardship, and creating more meaningful visitor experiences. The accompanying playbook provides a sustainable framework for future exhibit development, ensuring consistency in messaging while remaining adaptable to evolving visitor needs and institutional priorities. Overall, this project positions interpretation as an ongoing practice of connection: one that invites visitors to recognize native plants not simply as objects of beauty, but as vital participants in living ecological, sustainable, and cultural systems.
