Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to explore the nuanced experiences of second-generation Asian American immigrants, through an exhibit titled Not Enough: Voices of Second-Generation Asian American Immigrants. This exhibit was hosted by the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center from May 20th - June 4th 2024. The exhibition was created in collaboration with a group of twelve second-generation Asian American immigrants from the University of Washington student body. The overarching narrative of the exhibit focuses on the feeling of not being "American enough" or "Asian enough," a common sentiment among second-generation immigrants. It is structured around four key themes: Food, Language, Family, and Appearance, each illustrated by first-hand accounts and personal objects contributed by these community members. Not Enough is a testament to the importance of cultural representation and seeks to create a space for connection, recognition, and dialogue, celebrating the diversity and resilience that arise from navigating multiple cultures.
