Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to create an educational tool that would convey foundational STEM concepts that underlie the content of natural history museums in an interactive way to inspire curiosity in younger audiences, introduce large evolutionary concepts in early development, and correct misconceptions that are often taught and perpetuated. The product took the shape of a video game titled NottaFish, with the language and content catered to grade levels 3-5 and a storyline that follows the small and large-scale evolution of cetaceans. The game includes two levels and six micro games total, with the first level introducing concepts on small-scale evolution, or microevolution, and the second level discussing large-scale, or macroevolution. Lessons in each game re-introduce players to terminology and concepts that are typically taught in the targeted grade levels (based on King County School District curriculum), reinforcing these concepts and broadening the scope of them. To ensure the simplified lessons are accurate, the game script has been verified by a cetacean expert and STEM educators. The game will be hosted by the Burke Museum and will be available for free on the museum's website. The purpose of this project expands beyond the benefit of a museum patron and advocates for accessibility through the free availability of the game, equity through the sharing of educational materials with all members of the public, and accessibility through the use of an approachable and interactive design.
