Abstract:
Something in the Way, an art exhibit, focuses on the issue of museums in the United States lacking access and inclusion for the homeless population, specifically in Seattle. By providing a welcoming environment and invitations to display artwork for and by homeless visitors and artists, as well as incorporating evidence and data from an online survey, this project demonstrated that museums are capable of providing an accessible and inclusive atmosphere for the unhoused community. The exhibit hosted 13 artists, presenting a total of 25 pieces all focused on the observations, experiences, and empathy of and toward the homeless community. Each artist focused on a unique art medium (for example a cocktail suit covered in graffiti) to best describe the environment and reality homeless individuals lived in. Every artist presented their pieces in the Belltown Artwalk and Market, the Artist’s Panel, as well as participated in hosting a film screening to allow visitors to delve deeper into their reality. The use of a survey distributed as a QR code was done to measure visitors’ opinions on whether museums should allow homeless individuals to visit them. Not only did Something in the Way host events for the general public, it was also able to bring the attention of 10 homeless individuals who admired the artwork and left behind gifts. The need for proper access and inclusion for underrepresented individuals is apparent among housed survey participants and in the boycott of the Seattle Art Museum, enabling Something in the Way to use community engagement as a factor in promoting equality and equity.
