Additional Materials
Most of the Additional Materials that seem to surface in my work as English Studies & Research Commons Librarian are websites that I’ve created, contributed to, or had some part in inspiring.
Here is a selection of that work:
Storytelling Fellows Exhibition Webpage
This webpage is in the Research Commons zone of the UW Libraries webpages. It is an exhibition of digital stories from the Storytelling Fellows program that I co-lead with Perry Yee:
UW Libraries Podcasting Website
This UW Libraries Podcasting website is Perry Yee’s design, and he wrote over half of it, but I have contributed large chunks of it and have helped in keeping it updated over the years.
South Asian Films & Books Podcast by Alka Kurian
This is the South Asian Films & Books Podcast, which Alka Kurian–a professor at UW Bothell–began in the UW Libraries Digital Scholarship Summer Immersion (DSSI) program. I co-taught the podcasting track in DSSI, and I worked closely with Dr. Kurian to help her draft her first episode and record an interview with the writer Amitav Ghosh.
A Podcast Series for Geography Classes by Julian Barr
Julian Barr, a former graduate student in the Geography Department, participated in many Research Commons events and workshops. He presented his research at Scholars’ Studio, he joined us for Storytelling Fellows: Digital Storytelling, and he also made a podcast in DSSI. This is a podcast series that Julian developed for the undergraduate geography classes that he taught.
Stutter. Podcast. Repeat: A Podcast by a Graduate Student, David Sanchez
David Sanchez, a graduate student in Speech & Hearing Sciences, developed this podcast about childhood stuttering in a Storytelling Fellows: Podcasting workshop that I co-taught with Perry Yee.
UW Libraries High School Internship Webpage
This is a webpage for the UW Libraries High School Internship that Kian Flynn and I created and maintain.
Annotated Edition of The Mill on the Floss
This is an annotated edition of George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss, which was made by a group of undergraduate and graduate students in an English class taught by Dr. Jesse Oak Taylor. I taught a workshop in which I taught students how to use the Manifold publishing application, and then I consulted with them further about it later on.
A Manifold Book Made in Guarav Pai’s English Class
Over the years, Guarav Pai has been another graduate student who has attended many UW Libraries workshops in digital scholarship–workshops that deal with things like Omeka for digital exhibits, Pressbooks for digital books, and Manifold for digital books. For this project, as I did with Dr. Oak Taylor’s class, I visited Guarav’s English class and first demonstrated to undergraduate students how to make a book with Manifold. Then, as the quarter proceeded, in this digital book Key Concepts in Contemporary America, they presented research they had done about particular words and phrases.
A Pressbook Made in Matthew Hitchman’s English Class
For this project, I had consulted with a graduate student, Matthew Hitchman, about the benefits and drawbacks of two digital-book publishing platforms: Manifold and Pressbooks. After our meeting, Matthew decided that Pressbooks was a better platform for a project in his English class–a book about climate justice–so I put him into contact with Lauren Ray, the Open Educational Resources Librarian. Lauren and I then visited Matthew’s class to teach students about how to use Pressbooks. We also consulted with them later about the project.
