The film Se7en tells the story of two detectives, Mills and Somerset, who are investigating a series of murders punishing those who committed each of the seven deadly sins. I chose to analyze Dante’s influence on this work because I watched the movie a couple of years ago and found it very interesting, and I really enjoy many of the director’s other works. I remember the two detectives talking about Dante’s inferno and not knowing what they were talking about, so when this project came along I thought it was the perfect opportunity to dive deeper into a movie and a director that I found interesting. Se7en references all three canticles of the Divine Comedy, however draws most of its inspiration from Inferno as John Doe punishes people for the sins in some way related to their sin, similar to the contrapasso in Inferno. He does not give them any chance of redemption like Purgatorio, he just decides that they deserve death. The detectives even read Dante’s inferno to get insight into Doe’s motivation. At the beginning of the film the killings are very similar to the punishments in Inferno in the sense that they are killed based directly on their sin. However, as the film goes on the killings become more nuanced, which is explored further in my paper. The two main characters, Detective Somerset and Detective Mills also seem to be based on Virgil and Dante respectively. Overall Se7en draws heavily and expands upon the ideas of Dante’s Divine Comedy and more specifically Dante’s inferno.
