For my paper, I chose to analyze the extremely popular serial killer movie Se7en. I chose to conduct a comparative analysis on this film because not only have I seen the movie before and enjoyed it, but also there are also many great references to The Divine Comedy. The film makes references to all 3 canticles of The Divine Comedy and follows a similar narrative structure to Dante Alighieri’s poem. Additionally, characters in Se7en show many resemblances to the key characters in The Divine Comedy, and both works make interesting commentaries on similar themes. However, by analyzing both works and through utilizing many academic journals investigating similar topics, my findings indicate that while Se7en follows a similar narrative structure to that of The Divine Comedy, and that its characters seem directly inspired from characters in The Divine Comedy, the two works make two very different opinions on the possibility of salvation. Where the two works disagree on the theme of redemption however, they become more similar when depicting the representation of sin. In that sense, I found it easier to find direct references to The Divine Comedy, specifically the seven terraces of purgatory, and the concept of “contrapasso” from Inferno. Finally, my research found that despite there being similarities between the two works on the topics of redemption and in, the works seemed to diverge the most when discussing morality, as while Se7en’s moral code is based more in atheism, The Divine Comedy’s is based in old Christian ideologies. By researching the similarities and differences between the two works, it becomes evident that while there is a lot to unpack in terms of the ways that Se7en has taken inspiration from The Divine Comedy, there is a lot more meaningful analysis that can be done on the differences between the two works, and that through the analysis of the differences, we can better understand how Se7en has used The Divine Comedy generate its own independent message.
