The book cover shows a set of green medicine bottles and white book covers nested inside each other in an alternating pattern, so that the book covers look like labels on the bottles and the bottles look like images on the covers. The smallest cover contains the subtitle, Healing, Literature, and Popular Knowledge in Early Modern China. It is nested inside a medicine bottle that is in turn printed on the cover of a larger book, and the book and bottle contain the title, Novel Medicine. They are nested inside an even larger bottle, which contains the author’s name, Andrew Schonebaum, and fills the cover of the book itself.
