SPORTS, CULTURE, AND SOCIETY

ENGL 298B Spring 2024

by Imam Subkhan

A photo essay, comprising a cohesive amalgamation of images, serves as a vehicle for narrative expression. Through this modality, students articulate their narratives about sports and its intersection with culture and society. In this context, sports cannot be extricated from the societal milieu because they serve as a societal pulse, reflecting and shaping societal interaction, connection, identity, and cultural expression. Beyond simply inviting readers to experience the visual spectacle of sports as a socio-cultural phenomenon, the photo essay in this collection encourages interpretation, fostering the creation of new meanings and artistic exploration. Diverging from words and language that may confine reality, these static photos possess the unique capacity to not only capture reality but also generate new realities through the stories they visually narrate.
