Acknowledgments

Mapping Shangrila could not have been written without the many Tibetans in northwest Yunnan, Qinghai, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), and beyond whose guidance, knowledge, and insights made this work possible. We thank them first and foremost.

We are very excited about this book’s placement in the University of Washington Press’s Studies on Ethnic Groups in China series. We thank series editor Stevan Harrell, two anonymous manuscript reviewers, and executive editor Lorri Hagman for their helpful suggestions and support. We are also grateful to editor Tim Zimmermann for his help throughout the publication process and to editor Mary Ribesky and copy editor Laura Iwasaki for their sharp eyes and detailed attention in seeing the manuscript through its final stages of production. Mark Henderson’s cartographic skills significantly enhance Mapping Shangrila; we thank him for his maps. We thank Celia Braves for her index, which lends coherence to the volume. Publication was supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation (BCS 0847722).

Each and every one of the contributors to this volume was a delight to work with. We are very appreciative of their intellectual contributions, collegiality, timeliness, and patience. We are also deeply grateful to each other, for an exciting and truly collaborative exchange of ideas and for the hard work, wisdom, and energy put into this project.

Finally, we are both indebted to our families. Chris thanks Tanya, Aaron, and Noah for sharing in the journey with understanding, perseverance, and love. Emily thanks Kunga, Osel, and Seldron for their companionship and patience with her constant presence in front of a computer.
